Introduction

The purpose of this document is to give guidance to approved contractors and suppliers who are engaged in the protection of substrates with the use of Astro Anti Graffiti Paint.

THE ASTRO ANTI-GRAFFITI SYSTEM

Suitable Substrates - Astro Anti Graffiti Paint is suitable for a wide variety of surfaces including: brick, stone, concrete, wood and metal.

To achieve optimum performance Astro Anti Graffiti Paint is usually applied in 2 coats over a Astro Anti Graffiti Paint Clear Non-darkening Sealer or Colour Coat. It can however be applied directly to some bare substrates or existing coatings. Very porous surfaces may require 3 coats.

Availability

Astro Anti Graffiti Paint is available in Matt or Gloss finish and in 5Litre or 20Litre tins.

Installation

Application is by brush roller or spray. But if spraying take care not to contaminate surrounding properties. Astro Anti Graffiti Paint is a White Spirit based product and can be applied in much the same way as a conventional solvent based lacquer. However it is important to note that Astro Anti Graffiti Paint is a Moisture curing Product.

The product must be applied at the correct spread rate of 8 to 10m² per l to achieve the required film thickness.

Moisture Curing - This means that the product will start to cure when it comes into contact with atmospheric moisture. The rate of cure will depend on the relative temperature and humidity. Therefore only decant as much material as you can easily use in 30 to 60 mins, and replace the lids immediately. If the product is contaminated with water it will start to cure straight away. Once opened tins should be used that day and not stored.

Tools - All spray equipment should be washed through with gun wash immediately
after use. Brushes and rollers used on small jobs may be washed out straight away with brush cleaner or strong thinners. Brushes and rollers used on larger work may have to be discarded. This should be taken into account when pricing for work.
Suitable for External use only and use only in well ventilated areas.

Removal - To Remove Graffiti from surfaces treated with Astro Anti Graffiti Paint

Warm Water Pressure Washing - Is the main method of Graffiti removal from substrates protected with Astro Anti Graffiti Paint. Particularly on large areas or rough surfaces.

Settings - The machine should be set at between 700 and 900 psi. Use a fan tip of around 30° to 45°. The lance should be held at an angle to the surface and the tip kept a few inches away from it.

The heat should be set between 50 and 60 C°. Lower temperatures are less effective and higher ones can damage any previous coatings that might be under the Anti Graffiti Paint. Cold water pressure washing can be used but is much less effective, taking longer and requiring the lance to be 'worked' more.

Note - Damage can occur to the Anti Graffiti Paint and the substrate if-
* The power used is above 1000 psi.
* A turbo or pencil tip is used.
* The tip touches or gets too close to the surface.
* Too high a temperature is used.
* The substrate or areas of the substrate, such as the mortar lines, are very weak and friable.
* The Graffiti Magic Coating is damaged or incomplete, allowing the pressure washer to get behind it and blow it off.

Note : Strong solvent cleaners should not be used with Astro Anti Graffiti Paint as they may damage the system.
