CAVITY FIRE BARRIER

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to give guidance to approved contractors and suppliers who are engaged in the fire stopping of Cavities in buildings using the Astro Cavity Fire Barrier on a Roll System.

• Passive fire protection products prevent the passage of fire, smoke and hot gases.
• Prevent the spread of fire, smoke and hot gases through a building by containing it in the compartment of origin.
• Maintain the integrity of escape routes from a building.
• Reduce loss or damage to property from the effect of fire and smoke.
• Maintain pressure differential between compartments and ventilation channels

Astro Cavity Fire Barrier

This is a high expansion intumescent strip of typical dimensions 4 mm thick x 75 mm wide and is supplied in rolls of 6.3 metres long. The strip is encased in a red pvc sleeve to provide excellent weather protection and easy identification on site.

Installation of Cavity Fire Barrier

If a cavity is wider than the nominal 50mm then the cavity can be reduced to 50mm or less via the use of an appropriately sized timber batten.

The Cavity Fire Barrier can then be stapled to the batten as shown on the left.

The strip should be stapled along its centre line using 14 mm long corrosion resistant staples at intervals of approximately 250mm.

Ends of the roll should be tightly butted together.

If the cavity fire barrier is cut then the pvc sleeve should be folded around the exposed end to maintain weather protection and this then stapled to the sheathing board.
