Fire Batt and Coating Mastic
Trade Name ASTRO BATT & ASTRO COAT Jump to installation instructions

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to give guidance to approved contractors and suppliers who are engaged in the fire stopping of service penetrations in walls and floors using the Astro Batt & Astro Coat

All service holes through floors and compartment walls must be fire stopped to prevent the passage of fire, smoke and hot gases.
The key points for intumescent passive fire protection products are :-

  • Prevent the spread of fire, smoke and hot gases through a building by containing it in the compartment of origin.
  • Maintain the integrity of escape routes from a building.
  • Reduce loss or damage to property from the effect of fire and smoke.
  • Maintain pressure differential between compartments and ventilation channels.

THE ASTRO BATT & COAT SYSTEM

ASTROflame Fire batt and coating Mastic are designed and manufactured to meet BS476 Part 20 with a 4 hour fire barrier including smoke seal.

The ASTROflame Fire batt consists of a mineral fibre board of 160 kg/m3 density and 2mm coating of Astroflame Acrylic mastic on both faces. At normal temperatures, the ASTROflame Fire batt installed with the ASTROflame Mastic remains flexible to permit thermal and mechanical movements of the services. Both products are unaffected by oil, fungus, moisture, vermin, weather and contains no halogens or asbestos.

The advantages of the ASTROflame Fire batt and the Mastic are as follows:

Suitable for indoor use only.
Long life, fibre free and easy to use.
Remains flexible between -5 to 70oC
Single panel of thickness gives 4 hours fire barrier.
Smoke and acoustic isolation.
Suitable for large openings on walls or floors

Installation

Ensure all service penetrations are complete and installed to the manufacturers recommendations. Remove dust and debris by brushing out the opening and surrounding area.

Apply masking tape around the face of the aperture, approximately 50mm from the opening any penetrating services should also be masked at 150mm from each face of the Astro Batt.

Measure the overall dimension of the aperture and cut the batt to suit ensuring a good friction fit using a sharp knife or padsaw.

Brush apply Astro Coat to all internal surfaces within the aperture and to all contact surfaces on any penetrating services. Carefully fit the pre-cut batt into the aperture, ensuring that all batt to batt surfaces are also adequately coated with Astro Coat (so that the coating acts as an adhesive at all joints).

Seal any gaps between the services and the Astro Batt, and between the batt and surfaces of the aperture with Astroflame intumescent acrylic mastic.

Apply a brush coat of Astro Coat (800 microns wft) to all services for a distance of 150mm from the batt surface and 50mm around the edge of the aperture.

For floor applications .
Pour or trowel Astro FR Mortar mix onto the mineral fibre shutter, and build up to the required thickness with further applications. To make the Astro FR Mortar pour clean potable water into suitable mixing vessel and add sufficient dry Astro FR Mortar to achieve the required consistency, stirring the slurry to remove all lumps. The normal mixing ratios are :

2.5 parts FR Mortar : 1 part Water Pourable mix
3 parts FR Mortar : 1 part Water Trowelable mix
4 parts FR Mortar : 1 part Water Hand Batch mix

IMPORTANT : ALWAYS ADD DRY POWDER TO THE WATER
