Introduction The purpose of this document is to give guidance to approved contractors and suppliers who are engaged in the fire stopping of Cladding systems on buildings using the Astro Clad and Astro Clad CF Drainage seal.
Astro Clad & Astro Clad CF Drainage seal ASTRO Clad will create a fire barrier within the cladding preventing or delaying the spread of fire in both vertical and horizontal applications for 30 or 60 minute ratings. The product has been tested in the most onerous combustible cladding designs. Tested to BS 476Part 20 East to fit designs are available to either be tracked or friction fitted into existing cavities, retro fitting into existing cavities is possible. Standard seals sizes available to suit typical cavities of 20 to 50mm wide and special seals can be produced for cavities up to 115mm wide.
Availability Available in two types: Astro CF Drainage Seal: a compression fitted drainage seal designed 30 x 25mm and 1 metre in length for applications requiring a cavity of 20-50mm width, when water drainage and limited ventilation is required. The standard compression seal is a spongy strip 25 x 25mm and has a polycarbonated honeycomb strip along one edge providing the equivalent of approximately 5mm wide free area giving a total width of approximately 30mm. INSTALLING ASTRO CLAD To fit Astro Clad the release paper is removed from the back of the strip, the strip can then be positioned in the required position on the face of the sheathing board and on top of any breathable membrane. Tacks should be hammered along the centre line of the exposed face of the strip at approximately 250mm intervals to secure the seal in position. The seal should be cut to the required length with a sharp knife and strip ends be butted together at the joins.
INSTALLING ASTRO CLAD CF DRAINAGE SEAL To fit Astro Clad CF Drainage Seal in gaps 20-28mm wide, the strip can be simply be compressed to fit with the polycarbonate strip fitting tightly against the outer cladding face. In gaps 28-50mm wide, the gap should be reduced to approximately 25mm wide via the insertion of strip of, fire rated mineral wool batt, the strip can then be placed in the remaining gap, to secure the batt strips and compressible seal prior to the fitting of the outer cladding panel pins of a suitable length can be employed. The compressible seals can be retro-fitted into existing structure via the cutting of suitably sizes and insertion holes at regular intervals to give access to the cavity, the seal can then be slid into position. The seal should be cut to the required length with a sharp knife and strip ends be butted together at the joins. If strips of mineral wool batt are used the joints between the batt strip should be lapped to prevent fire penetratio
Compliance Astro Clad is manufactured in the EU, meeting the highest quality standard in compliance with ISO EN 9001:2000 . For fire test certification contact Astroflame Fireseals technical department.
