Trade Name : ASTROGRILLE Jump to installation instructions

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to give guidance to approved contractors and suppliers who are engaged in the fire stopping of service penetrations in walls, doors, ducting, trunking and pipe work using the Astroflame intumescent fire grille.

All service holes through any fire rated structure must be fire stopped to prevent the passage of fire, smoke and hot gases. The key points for intumescent passive fire protection products are :-

  • Prevent the spread of fire, smoke and hot gases through a building by containing it in the compartment of origin.
  • Maintain the integrity of escape routes from a building.
  • Reduce loss or damage to property from the effect of fire and smoke.
  • Maintain pressure differential between compartments and ventilation channels.
  • Fire barrier for up to 1 hour

THE ASTRO GRILLE SYSTEM

A durable Intumescent Ventilation Grille which is easily mounted in fire doors, ducts, trunking, pipework and walls and can provide in excess of 1 hour fire protection.

ASTROflame Intumescent Fire Grille comprises of a moisture resistant intumescent core within a galvanised steel frame with vermin proof 6mm steel mesh fitted to both faces. The design allows for a free area of upto 80% (based on calculations on a 600mmx600mm grille).

When activated by heat from a fire the intumescent material expands (intumesces) to many its original volume to provide an effective fire resisting seal in the aperture, to stop the passage of fire, smoke and hot gases.

ASTROflame Intumescent Fire Grille's are tested to BS 476: Part 22: 1987 for use in either half or one hour fire rated assemblies.

Installation

NOT SUITABLE FOR USE IN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

For installation in fire doors simply cut a hole in the fire door to suit the size of the intumescent fire grille, ensure the aperture is now clean and free from dust or contamination.

Run a small bead of Astroflame intumescent mastic around the frame of the grille and push to a snug fit within the aperture, if the door is thicker than the grille, fit the grille flush to the face of the door in the higher risk room.

Fix grille in place with steel screws, one in each corner both sides of the grille and at 150mm centers, screws must be of an adequate length depending on the application. Face fit Astro steel face plates to either side of the door to afford more protection for the grille and for a more aesthetically pleasing finish.

For installation into walls, where the integrity of the structure must be maintained in the event of a fire, secure the grille by fixing steel angles to the structure with steel screws and fixing the grille in place at 150mm centers, screws must be of an adequate length depending on the application.

Seal with ASTROflame Intumescent Acrylic Mastic, or secure the grille in place with ASTROflame Fire Resistant Mortar.Face fit Astro steel face plates to either side of the wall to afford more protection for the grille and for a more aesthetically pleasing finish

For installation into trunking, ducting or pipes:
Run a small bead of Astroflame Intumescent Mastic around the frame of the grille and push to a snug fit within the structure in the required position. Fix with steel screws at 150mm centers, screws must be of an adequate length depending on the application
