Introduction The purpose of this document is to give guidance to approved contractors and suppliers who are engaged in the fire stopping of glazing using the astroflame intumescent glazing tape. All apertures in fire rated structures must be fire stopped to prevent the passage of fire, smoke and hot gases.
THE ASTRO Glazing Tape SYSTEM ASTROflame Intumescent Glazing Tape is a polymer based extruded strip, developed as good quality internal sealant, which in the event of a fire will intumesce and prevent the passage of fire and smoke through the joint. When using wired or fire resistant glass, the glazing system should be able to withstand the effects of fire for as long as the glass. The ASTROflame Intumescent Glazing Tape will help to provide an effective flame and smoke seal despite degradation of the glass and framing materials. This product has been tested in a typical fire door construction to BS 476 part 22:1987. The advantages of the ASTROflame Intumescent Glazing Tape are as follows:-
Availability Form Supplied: 15m reel.on siliconised release paper. Colour: White / Brown. Boxed in 12. All surfaces should be clean, dry, frost free and free from oil, grease and other contamination. Normal glazing techniques should be employed when glazing internal fire screens, with particular attention being paid to the type and location of setting blocks to ensure glass does not drop in the event of a fire, giving passage for smoke etc. Any beads should be bedded on ASTROflame Intumescent Acrylic Mastic which should also be applied between the edge of the glass and the base of the rebate. Apply from the roll to clean, dry and dust free substrates. The tape should be fixed firmly to one surface, the release paper removed and closing face engaged pressing the materials together to maximise the pressure sensitive nature of the sealant. Press the tape into position around the rebate ensuring corners to be butt jointed ensuring adequate edge contact, and remove the backing paper. Press the glass into position on its setting blocks. Apply the tape to the inside face of the bead, and mastic on the bottom of the rebate and press the bead into place. The bead should then be secured in place, with screws, cap off the top of the glazing tape to the height of the bead with astroflame intumescent acrylic mastic . Joints should be compressed by 20% for optimum performance. Best applied at temperatures above 4 deg C. If required, glazing blocks to be used following the requirements of BS6262.
