Introduction

The purpose of this document is to give guidance to approved contractors and suppliers who are engaged in the fire stopping of service penetrations in fire rated structures using the Astro Mastic .

All service holes through floors and compartment walls must be fire stopped to prevent the passage of fire, smoke and hot gases.

• Prevent the spread of fire, smoke and hot gases through a building by containing it in the compartment of origin.
• Maintain the integrity of escape routes from a building.
• Reduce loss or damage to property from the effect of fire and smoke.
• Maintain pressure differential between compartments and ventilation channels.

THE ASTRO intumescent mastic SYSTEM

ASTROflame Acrylic Mastic is a water based acrylic composition designed to provide fire barrier including smoke seal for gaps up to 25mm within a structural floor or wall with different substrates.

The finished product remains flexible between -20oC to 70oC and in the presence of fire the mastic seal expands to form fire and smoke barrier up to 4 hours.

The advantages of the Astroflame Acrylic Mastic are as follows:-

• Suitable for indoor and outdoor environment without additional protection
• Glass transition temperature below -25oC and therefore the seal remains flexible between -20oC to 70oC
• Halogen free, free from asbestos, fibres (MMMF) and solvents
• Not affected by fungus, vermin or rodent .

Installation

Do not apply mastic if ambient temperature is below 5 degree Celsius.

All surfaces should be clean , dry and free from frost, grease and any other contamination. It should not be used on substrates that bleed oils, plasticisers or solvents.

Minimum depth of seal should be at least 10mm. Gaps over 10mm width, insert a backing foam using a minimum of 24Kg/M2 density of polyethylene foam, fire retardant PU or mineral fibre board of 140Kg/M2 density. Apply mastic within gap so that the gap to depth ratio is the same.

Masking tape should be used where protection to substrate is important, this should be removed immediately after tooling off, (ensure that air bubbles are excluded and that an acceptable surface finish is obtained.

Where ever possible use a suitable backing material to ensure the correct depth of material has been applied

Ensure records of all installations are kept.

Storage and disposal

Astro flame intumescent mastic is not affected by the outdoor environment. However for long term storage and ease of installation, it is recommended that they should be stored indoors. shelf life given is 12 months.
