Intumescent Internal Fire Clamp - for Internal Metal Trunking

Trade Name: ASTRO NT CLAMP

Internal clamp

Allows free air flow through trunking

Easy to install with no maintenance

Perfect solution for retrofit of cables

Continuity of protection removal not necessary for cable alteration

The intumescent fillers contained within the ASTRO Clamp will intumesce (expand) at about 125°C to form an insulating char. BS476 Part 20: 1987, AS 1530.4 and AS 4072.1

Areas Of Use

Suitable for all metal trunking where it breaches fire compartment floors and walls.

Under raised access floors where cabling is often abundant, i.e. computer, switch and security rooms.

Retrofit: Perfect for installations where frequent cable alterations occur.

Description

COMPARTMENTATION: The sub-division of compartments in a building, if effectively fire-stopped, will prevent the spread of fire and smoke through fire-resisting and separating elements, thereby reducing the risk of and fire damage to the primary building structure. Electrical penetrations, such as metal trunking, by necessity breach these elements. It is therefore essential that fully tested products/systems are installed to maintain the integrity and insulation of the compartment wall or floor whilst providing adequate thermal insulation to the internal cabling.

With metal trunking being such an excellent medium for heat conduction and coupled with the flammability and conductivity of cables, the need to fire stop metal trunking internally is paramount in containing a fire’s spread. PVC cable sheaths contain about 50% chlorine which when submitted to temperatures exceeding 140°C will start to vaporize, emitting highly corrosive hydrogen chloride gas. If water vapour is present and combines with the gas forming hydrochloric acid, the corrosive effect on the cabling and metal trunking could cause irreparable damage to a building’s power and communication systems, which may continue well after the fire itself has been extinguished.

ASTRO Internal Clamp consists of 2 or 4 steel fins (depending on whether 2 or 4 hour fire resistance is required) which are welded at equidistant centres to a steel plate. The inner and outer surfaces of the fins are lined with an intumescent sheet.

The ASTRO Internal Clamp is mechanically restrained within the trunking by means of a twist and lock mechanism which is riveted through the top of the ASTRO Internal Clamp and partially lined with intumescent graphite sheet.

Installation

To install the ASTRO Internal Clamp insert into the metal trunking either before or after the cables have been pulled. Once in place, rotate the twist and lock mechanism, thereby retaining the ASTRO Internal Clamp in place.

If required and with some pressure it can slide along the trunking to suit site application requirements. ASTRO Internal Clamps must always be contained within the fire resisting and separating elements.

Maintenance

Unlike intumescent pillows which are the most common methods of fire protection, ASTRO Internal Clamps do not require renewal in the event of cable alteration. Thus ensuring this protection is permanent without the potential loss or damage which effect other system types

Health and Safety

The product does not present any known health hazards during or after installation. Normal good industrial and personal hygiene practises should be observed.
